Answers Beside the Lamp
Questions to take to a maker, a showroom or the person installing your light.
Will light pass through a ceramic shade?
Most ceramic shades are effectively opaque at typical thicknesses. Some thin, suitably formulated porcelain transmits a diffuse glow. Ask to see the actual object illuminated. Read about opacity and transmission.
Is slip-cast lighting still handmade?
It can be. A mould repeats a form, while trimming, joining, piercing and glazing may remain hand processes. Ask the maker which stages are done by hand. Compare forming methods.
Why do pierced patterns look different at home?
Source size and position, wall distance, surrounding light and photographic exposure affect the visible pattern. Compare a demonstration using the intended source. Follow the opening to the wall.
Can I use any LED bulb?
No. Match the specified cap, physical size, rating and operating conditions. Check enclosure and dimming compatibility with the complete fitting’s instructions. Read the daily-use checks.
Does a glaze crack mean the lamp is broken?
Glaze crazing differs from a crack through the body. If damage is new, sharp, loose or uncertain, stop use and ask the maker to assess it. Distinguish surface conditions.
Can a glazed ceramic lamp go in a bathroom?
Glaze alone does not establish bathroom suitability. The complete fitting must be appropriate to its location, with relevant protection and installation requirements assessed by a qualified electrician. Read about moisture and location.
Will a ceramic pendant be too heavy for my ceiling?
Request the complete installed weight and mounting instructions. An installer must assess the ceiling and suitable fixings; appearance alone cannot establish capacity.
How should I clean a textured ceramic lamp?
Follow the maker’s instructions, disconnect a portable lamp and let it cool. A soft dry brush may be suitable. Do not immerse the assembly or spray liquid into openings.
Can I drill a larger hole or rewire the lamp myself?
Do not treat these as cosmetic alterations. Drilling can fracture ceramic, and electrical changes can affect safety. Consult the maker and a qualified professional.
Is a pierced shade enough for reading?
Not necessarily. A decorative projection can coexist with low light at the page. Assess the task area separately and add suitable task lighting when needed.
